Canon provides a website that hosts the updates ( Like this, though you should check your local Canon site if you're not in the USA). Which program is it? Many thanks. As I recall, it has been very simple for the updates I've gotten since I bought my 7D.

Very cool, but a simple question: how do I update the firmware on my camera? I suspect I need the software that came on the disk with the camera, but I never installed it on my computer. The press release ascribes this to "powerful memory management algorithms taken from Canon's flagship EOS-1 series". So I'll wait either for that, or until it becomes clear that the new firmware is solid.Īlso curious about how they did that w/ a simple firmware update Just not immediately it's almost always a Bad Idea to be among the first to use a major new release of any software, and chances are pretty good there'll be at least one minor point release coming along to fix bugs. Still, I can see that I might use some of these features from time to time, and I will be upgrading my camera eventually. I shoot stills, almost exclusively RAW, process them on my computer, and even when I had a 20D with its 6-shot (for RAW) buffer, I rarely shot a burst that ran into that limitation. Now, most of this isn't significant to me.

Oddly, I haven't seen mention anywhere (yet) as to whether these can be set to apply automatically when shooting JPEGs, as peripheral illumination correction can, but since the firmware includes the code needed to do this, it would make sense to do it. Two things that are sort of missing from the list above (they'd be lumped under the new in-camera RAW editing feature) are correction of distortion and chromatic aberration not only did the camera not have in-camera RAW editing before, but it didn't have either of these corrections at all! The only item it had to correct optical flaws in the lens was peripheral illumination correction. I'm pretty sure the range of new and improved features in this firmware update far exceeds anything they've done before in a firmware update for any EOS body. It's too bad that it won't continue after the 7DII (or whatever it is called.) comes along. It shows the power of the processing available in modern cameras that they can be upgraded this easily. It is gratifying to see Canon continuing to support the 7D with new features. I'll have to check out the video when I get home tonight! So much quicker than needing to slog through the clock setting when you change time zones. But being able to set a "do not pass" setting will be something I'll need to look into. I don't currently use Auto ISO, as I wasn't really happy with the camera being able to go all the way to 6,400 whenever it felt like. The in-camera rating because I can then quickly identify shots I thought were exceptional when I reviewed them in camera (and culled out the bad ones), when they get to the Mac.

Flying or not! Those little warblers move very fast even when not flying! The other two that really interest me are the in-camera image rating and the max Auto ISO setting. Yes, the burst is a big deal for bird photography.
